A famous legend explains how a young woman named Inger promised fidelity to her first love, vowing the Devil could claim her if she broke her word. When she attempted to marry another, the Devil appeared at Bregninge church and dragged her to the mound. Her bridal wreath protected her until a boy removed it, allowing the Devil to pull her into the barrow. This tale is thought to have saved Ingershøj from being leveled, unlike other nearby mounds.
