The Ardminish cist on the Isle of Gigha is associated with a folk tale about three men turned to stone for abandoning their wives. This myth is thought to be a later interpretation by Christian converts, possibly replacing an earlier belief that the stones were a dwelling place for ancestral spirits. The cist itself is a short cist, discovered during quarrying, and roughly aligned north-south, a direction associated with death.
