Investigating the Largest Chambered Barrow in Britain – Destruction & Reconstruction
In this video, we continue our exploration of megalithic monuments with an exciting trip to West Kennet Long Barrow – Said to be the largest and best preserved long barrow in the UK!
Join us, as we attempt to reveal what it looked like before the massive restoration and reconstruction work that took place in the 1950’s... and the wanton destruction of the sixteen, seventeen and eighteen hundreds. We go back over 350 years of recorded history, using antiquarian texts, multiple excavation reports and a wide variety of sketches, photos and video.
We aim to provide a complete and accurate presentation and assessment of all the available documentation regarding the sites we visit. As this information is an important part of our national heritage, and has often not yet been collated satisfactorily in a single collection, we have attempted to provide a concise summary within the video and will include a list of reliable sources in the video description. This list will eventually be reproduced on our website and updated as necessary.
