Every road should have one of these. Makes me wonder how long this way up north has been in continuous use for?

It does make you wonder, indeed. Like when you've hill forts overlooking major roads.... Mind you, perhaps around these parts, it might have been more of a case of boating up the coast and making camp for the night.
