The Tump is massive for a round barrow, I’m unsure whether the later re-use as a motte involved increasing the size of the mound.

Well what an interesting site. I often visit a friend who lives just a few miles from here (the site that is, not here as in here) and wasn't even aware of it. Looks like exactly the right time of year to visit with the bulbs bursting into flower. How come everyone's photo's look like beautiful spring days and we have had nothing but grey skies and rain?
It's a good one, taken me ages to get to it as although it's not far from my regular routes through Herefordshire it's far enough to be inconvenient and there's not much else within an easy reach of it. Still need to get up onto Garway Hill though. It also makes me think that other "Norman" mottes in the area (there are very many) may turn out to hide much earlier beginnings.
Plenty rain and grey here too :)
