It is appropriate to point out that this natural rock is what is known as a 'Saucer Stone'.
During the 16th and 17th centuries, the boundaries of the March Lands, gifted to the city of Aberdeen by Robert the Bruce, were defined by large earthfast stones, into which saucer-shaped cavities were bored. It is believed that these saucers would have been filled with lead and an engraved die used to impress the city seal into them, although no tangible evidence of such a practice remains today.
The saucer stones were replaced with the current numbered pillar-shaped markers inscribed 'ABD' in 1790.
