Geophysical survey of the area of the well, by Jan Dando (2012?). There seems to have been late Bronze Age or early Iron Age settlement nearby.

Oh June I read something you'd like earlier as well, or perhaps you're aware of it because I was reading something similar on your excellent 'Hidden Swindon' blog. It was a newspaper report from September 1936 - 'A huge sarsen was discovered yesterday in the extension of the burial ground at Swindon Parish Church. It has not yet been fully uncovered, but as far as can be judged seems to be at least nine feet wide and nine feet long.' Pretty big! But before I jump to hopeful conclusions about ancient sites reused, I don't know if SPC (Holy Rood?) is really that old. But I thought you might.
I didn't know about this stone until now Rhiannon. The church in question is said to be built on an ancient burial ground and far as I'm aware is the oldest church in Swindon (prehistoric remains have been found there). Only the chancel remains now but there are grave stones dating back to 16th century.
The peaceful parkland surrounding the church is known as the Lawns and up for grabs at the moment for car parking to service an Old Town redevelopment plan. Needless to say I have been voicing my objections but seem to be a small voice at the moment.
