I've never been to Silbury (but I have been to me... sorry.. I couldnae help myself...). I've seen hunners of pictures of it. Somehow this slightly blurry, weirded-out sunset pic is the coolest, most atmospheric and panoramically righteous Silbury pic I think I've ever seen. This is great.
Thank you! The sunset was a write-off at the Sanctuary, then heading to West Kennett avenue I saw a glow over the shoulder of Waden and rushed up to see if there was going to be a bit of a sunset after all. As I got to the top a red kite came and checked me out, then hung, still, in line with Silbury. A perfect moment. The picture doesn't do it justice but it's the best I could get.
I almost missed this Alken. You were there today? I went through Avebury this morning on the 49 to meet up with friend in Devizes. It was such a beautiful morning - flocks of fieldfares in the fields and sheep enjoying the sunshine. It actually felt very Solsticey and I really, really wanted to get off at Avebury (hardly anyone there this morning). I will never get tired of seeing Silbury and Avebury but probably take it a bit for granted.
Ps: When red kites turn up it always feels a bit magic - but mind you wrens have the same effect too.
Yes, went yesterday for the first time this year. It was beautiful weather, I walked from Oare up onto Pewsey downs, west to Knap Hill and Adam's Grave, then north along the Ridgeway to the Sanctuary. The sun set as I reached the northernmost stone of WKA.

I think I'll go and see this place in 2017.
