The remains of a later rectangular structure can be seen inside the curving enclosure wall. Fairbourne lies way below.

Bit off topic, but is the straight line on the right of the picture across the estuary , a railway track? If so I think I've been there a long time ago & have thought about it a lot. It's such a beautiful place, but I could never remember the name of the area. I knew it was near Barmouth somewhere.
It is indeed. It's the railway bridge over the Mawddach, which has a wooden toll footbridge running alongside it. Barmouth's at the bottom of the hill across the river.
