From the Proceedings of the Antiquaries Society of Scotland v39 – John Abercromby reports how he ‘attacked the cairn’ on the 2nd of June 1904, which was honest and enthusiastic at least. I hoped there might be a bit of a story about the ‘Trowie’ (or troll) but there isn’t.
Thanks for the link Rhiannon. Enjoyable read. It is a lovely cairn but it would be good to find out more about its name. I've just finished reading a lovely book "The Folklore of Orkney and Shetland" by Ernest Marwick. Some folklore books seem to want to suck the fun and wonder out of folk tales and customs but I found this book interesting and easy reading all the way through.
I've been to Dumglow mentioned also in your link. I can't remember the cairn and I see there is a hillfort there as well. I'll see if I can find my photos somewhere, might jog my memory!
