Abstract: The Priddy Long Barrow was partially excavated by UBSS in 1928, the first long barrow excavation to be undertaken by the Society. A very short report detailing some of the findings was published by Phillips and taylor in 1972 (with editor’s comments), when it was suggested to be an artificial mound containing human bone of Late Neolithic date. Few other conclusions were drawn but intriguing details suggested that this was a complex monument, worthy of re-analysis. This paper details the results of an examination of the site archive and offers a new interpretation of the monument. It is argued that the Priddy long barrow is a non-megalithic long barrow dating to the Early Neolithic period. At least four phases of activity and construction are suggested. new information on the finds, destroyed during World War II, is also given and new plans presented.
Thanks for that link Juamei, Jodie Lewis is so good on the Mendips prehistory, fascinating information (and there is no photo either on TMA!). Especially liked the bit about some 'paving' under the barrow of Red Sandstone, only to be found over a mile and half away on North Hill, giving credence to the assumption that 'ancestral land' was transported to a prehistoric site.....
I really want to get her long report/book "Monuments, Ritual And Regionality: The Neolithic Of Northern Somerset, By J. Lewis ". I'd have bought it by now if I was still living down that way I'm sure!
I didn't notice that, but interestingly if you see the link I put in Somerset today, there are two other barrows in the area that use Old Red Sandstone: Bristol Barrow, Chewton Mendip & Beacon Batch, Burrington

Think I paid £25 for my copy, very interesting, lots of tables but no index which makes finding stuff difficult. It is extraordinary the number of long barrows, in this area, North Somerset, 28 I think........Love to go back to the Ashen hill/ Nine Priddy round barrows one day.........
North Somerset is as rich an area for the neolithic and bronze age as Wessex was. The links are also clear between Somerset and the wider world. The skeletons found in Dorset (Cranborne chase I think, Down farm maybe) of the woman and small kids who isotope analysis showed had spent many years probably on mendip...
