It was a very popular pastime back then, the burning of witches. Being burnt for a witch (or wizard) was a real hazard if you were even slightly weird or didn't get on with the local minister or kirk session clerk. I used to pass this site when visiting my late Uncle Willie in Dunning. The locals never let the paint fade.
