That looks like an excellent site HD and a little creepy too. Yet another site on my list to visit whenever I get a chance to visit those lovely isles.
How great are these? Like something that's been under the ocean for hundreds of years.
I found a large ring cairn-30m dia [to the south east of the ch-cairn in picture] with holes on the inside of the bank where standing stones may have been, thus maybe making this a ruined stone circle [there was one once reported years ago at sannox], i thought this was the place, as it was a bit weird how i found it, it felt as if i was taken there, i then took my family to see it and a young couple turned up nearly crying saying they were lost, and felt like they had been going round and round in a circle, around the said found circle, they must have been going round in a circle because if they had just picked one direction they would have got to a path as they are all round the site, we showed them the way back to the car park [it isn't far], they were grateful if a little embarrassed, it shouldn't be to hard to find as it was pulling people in that day, and i wasn't even looking, i started at the cairn in picture and started heading south east down the hill though the trees, it's quite big with lots of stone so easy to find. It's always felt i should have done more with this find, so if anyone else can please do!!! as i think it's an important site. The ruined cairn in the picture is a strange site also isn't it?
I know the one you refer to bladup. I photographed it yesterday evening but in my haste (midge attack) I blurred the pictures so cannot post them up tonight. I am over on Arran for another week so I'll get back up there.
The problems with the recently identified monuments at North Sannox are multifold! The Forestry Commission's signage is a bit inaccurate as to the number of monuments and their location. Canmore has noted only a few of the new discoveries but their mapping is a bit off as well. Of course that is no small wonder as the monuments themselves had five thousand years of peat and moorland growth on them before the conifer planting started fifty years ago. Then what was left after the tractors and heavy gear machined the hillside, the ditches were dug and the trees planted has now got fifty years of soil, leaf mould, pine needles and moss on top. I think we are very lucky to be able to see anything at all!
North Arran is also covered with natural glacial erratic boulders and stone clusters which can also look deceptively like they are the products of human activity so I tread warily up here!
