I think it's interesting to see where settlements used to be, in a time when the climate was a little warmer, and when the forests were more or less uninterrupted, and when the tree-line was way up the mountain sides.
With the added shelter afforded by trees, plus the available hunting, it explains why settlements were a lot higher above the base of the valleys than they are today.

Yes, and the valleys are surprisingly sheltered even without the trees. The high ridges give great protection.
