Needless to say I only eventually got around to the wondrous Pen-y-Crug last year, but this looks a nice substantial site as well..... I reckon the Mam C would be up for this on an iffy weather day - the only time I can drag her off the hills - and will thank you for checking it out.
Noticed barbed wire in some pics... after the Coedcae Gaer experience at Christmas, any access problems bearing in mind shorter legs?
I liked Pen y Crug a lot. This one is much less impressive in comparison but still worth a visit. Access is easy, if a bit muddy. Bridleway north of the hospital (along a sunken lane that must be pretty ancient itself), you get to a northwards kink and there's a footpath stile into a field straight ahead. The footpath runs sothwestwards round the south of the fort and then right round the eastern side. No problems with access - the fence in the one picture is a field boundary along the SW rampart, but doesn't affect access to the site - there are stiles. The interior is pretty uninteresting anyway, the place is better viewed from outside the rampart. The only thing to watch for is a large horse herd (in the field crossed by the footpath on the southwest of the fort on our visit) and a fair amount of mud in the sunken bridleway and also at the NE corner of the fort, where the stiles are surrounded by mud. Great views south and east, and Pen y Crug visible to the west. My annoying leg thing does at least mean I'll get to some of these easier ones that I've been putting off (for a rainy day!).
