Walked over this "Dun" when I was 18 on my way up to the top of Bhein Mhor. Cracking walking country. Born and brought up in Grantown - Gods country - thus the username!!
agree with you about the walking. love the area between Grantown and Dava. lots of great little hills to explore with hardly a soul about.
might sound a bit sad but the thing I remember most about the day was the hot sausage roll from a bakery in Grantown after.
Beautiful. That's my kind of place.
By the way, we stayed in Grantown-on-Spey once. Lovely place, so it is. I was very impressed by the architecture and space in the main street (the only street as I remember). Will go back there one day, definitely.

Photo was from December. I was there last in August, doing a few humps near Lochindorb, wild place when it's raining.
Low winter sun on the hills takes a bit of beating for me.
Aye, Lochindorb is infamous locally for the voracity of its midges as you probably experienced!

Surprising lack of prehistory in this immediate area - although given the absolute wilderness, maybe not so surprising.
last time there, we thought the top of Craig Tiribeg looked a good place to have our sandwiches. Nice rocky top to sit on with view through the trees down onto Lochindorb Castle. We lasted about 3 minutes. Midges came from everywhere. You could really feel them biting. Not good. It's been a bad year for them.
Midges and ticks ............little bastards!!!!!
Last year I was taking up to a dozen ticks off my mutt after every hill top walk. I dont find the common preventative treatments for dogs very effective. I've also heard that they are very carcenogenic.
I learned at a very early stage of my love for the hills (around Grantown) to protect myself from the little buggers (socks over my breeks!)
Worryingly - I'm learning of an increasing amount of people being diagnosed with Lymes disease - a lot of them who dont walk in the areas commonly associated with ticks.
As for midges - well.........
In fact they annoy me so much I might cut and paste this for a forum topic!!

I was in Grantown in May '93. It was a fairly cold May. Lovely place. Almost all my visits to Scotland are to go on the hills, but I wasn't up on the hills that visit.

I'm no Drewbhoy (Scottish and Dorrick Ambassador number 1) but I would appreciate being able to meet and greet fellow like-minded stoneheads.
Grantown is my hometown - although I've lived away from it for nearly 30 years - tremendous place to grow up with some fantastic history and some lovely cairns.
