A group of us visited Barnscar in the 80s after I read a book by a Cumbrian historian published in the 1920s.the auther claimed the "city" of Barnscar traded with Ireland and the Isle of man and the inhabitants fled in the face of a roman invasion settling in Buttermere which was apparently easier to defend. We filmed ourselves at the site but I don't have the technology to transfer it to my PC.
The sea would have been much further inland then, probably lapping around the Muncaster and other lower fells allowing the travellers to sail closer to the bottom of the site.
