Orkneyjar

A very interesting piece on Iron Age Orcadian burial practice, based on excavation of this structure.

I'm very interested in these results too. While not in the timeframe of Ness of Brodgar - though I do wonder if its occupants moved only a short distance away - Knowe 'O Skea and Gunness are sites that, from what reading I have done, may be of considerable importance. I do not doubt that the eruption of Helka, maybe even Thera, had a considerable impact of the Northern Isles in terms of alteration of vegetation and perhaps physical landscape - and inevitably the culture and economies of the then inhabitants (I don't know the date of Westray's raised beaches, but am interested in whatever excavations have taken place upon or a short distance from the old shoreline on Westray or elsewhere in the Northern Isles whatever its vintage) spencer Posted by spencer
