Doon Hill (Kildonnan)

Visited 30.08.

Doon Hill (Kildonnan) Enclosure is an earthwork located on the summit of Doon Hill c. 350m NNW of Kildonnan Farm on the B7042 between Sandhead and Portpatrick in Dumfries and Galloway. The rectangular grassy mound measures c. 20m E-W by 17.5m N-S. It is protected by an earth rampart and outer ditch. The highest remains of the rampart are c. 1.5m high in the SE corner. There is an entrance in the centre of the E Rampart. trove.scot/place/60597 estimates the internal dimensions of the enclosure to be 14m E-W and 12m transversely. Additionally, it dates the enclosure to the Iron Age.

Court Tomb

At the entrance to the parallel galleries at Cloghanmore. The rain, a seeming regular companion here, beat us back to the car way too soon.

The Long Man of Wilmington

Hill Figure

Considering the fact that a large long-barrow and large round-barrow on the hill above seem to “address” the space on which the Long Man stands, 15 years ago I allowed myself to speculate what the view of the Long Man might have looked like 5000 years ago.

I have now used AI to tone down a speculative hill figure from the original.

This is during the Neolithic. The newly created long-barrow can be seen, as well as sky-burials nearby, preparatory to their remains being added to the barrow.

Court Tomb

The stone in the foreground here is said to be the backstone of the gallery of an east facing court tomb. You’d never tell, but this end contains the best of what remains.
