The whole saga, for me, explained. This is wonderful stuff.

No real mention of a stone circle here but still well worth a read.

Looks very similar to cairns on Paps of Anu

Why was this stone put there? Local knowledge might give us at least two reasons.

“Lapse of Memory” is a short film I’ve recently completed which aims to give a new visual perspective on some of the prehistoric sites of Northern Britain. The film combines the photographic techniques of high dynamic range imaging and time-lapse in a panoramic format, and is made up of over 70,000 individual photographs.

Shot over the summer of 2008 as part of an MSc in Creative Technology, the film covers a number of sites in North Yorkshire, Cumbria & Scotland.

This detailed article is illustrated, and also includes text from Mr Bateman, who did one of his lightning excavations years before. The ‘kind farmer’ who’d lived there for 24 years couldn’t remember the place being previously examined. I’m not really surprised.

Ralph found this enormous stone buried in his garden a couple of years ago (as you do) and once uncovered it was Officially Approved by some archaeologists and put on the SMR. You can click through to some more detailed photos. He’s happy for you to arrange to go and see it.

Looking at the map, it’s very close to the famous Arthur’s Stone – just down the hill in fact, between there and the river. You can’t help thinking this could hold a clue to its mysterious story? (well at least in the strange alternative world of Rhiannon’s mind).

The museum has a display about Portfield Camp, including some info about it’s pre Iron-Age occupation. Artefacts are on display.
