Referred to both as a stone circle and a ring cairn, Cartron South is quite exceptional either way.

The circle stones can be seen to the right of the tree.

The field the Stane is in is now surrounded by a 2m deer fence. It can be accessed through a gate. I walked up through on a track through a field of sheep. It’s pretty impressive.

We didn’t investigate this one further. Seen from Newton Bank track to the west.

Newton Mulgrave round barrow, October 2024.

The much less impressive round barrow across the road to the southwest. Apologies for the glare, looking into the sun gave the only angle where the ‘mound’ stood out enough from the deep heather to be visible!

Looking southwest. There is another (smaller) barrow in front of the tree-line, and a further barrow and standing stone which we didn’t visit in the forestry.

The top of the barrow. It benefits from what the holiday brochure would call “sea glimpses”.

The flat-topped round barrow.

Newton Mulgrave long barrow, October 2024.

The long mound from its western end.

Looking down to the coast at Hinderwell. Hinderwell Beacon round barrow crowns the little hill in the centre of the shot.

It’s a pretty big monument, even if it is reduced from its original size.

The eastern end of the long barrow.

I really liked this, it’s a very good barrow in a lovely location. I haven’t been to many long barrows that look out over the sea.

Big skies over the barrow at NZ77171390, October 2024.

Stone visible on top of the barrow at NZ77171390.

Another fine barrow at NZ77171390, the northern of a pair in the middle of the moor.

The top of the round barrow at at NZ77121381.

Barrow at NZ77121381, looking west-ish.

Fine round barrow at NZ77121381, one of a pair in the middle of the moor.

Decent round barrow at NZ76721367.

Round barrow at NZ76721367, towards the western end of the group. Looking south-ish.

Visited on glorious Autumn day 10.10.26. I dowsed the energy lines here and powerful line running north south through the false entrance stone and into the barrow

Information board about the barrow, spelling out that this is an ancient sacred site.
