I decided to post this here rather than next door as I think it does fit the remit, sadly. As one of the many who finds beauty and inspiration in the living heritage of our ancient woodlands, this is deplorable.

I ready for the Revolution now TSC ... just tell me when and where - I'll be there.

Until then - this is to remind us what we may or may not leave behind.

I think we've all realised years ago that nothing in this country is sacred anymore once government gets its grubby hands on it. This is quite appalling if the story is accurate and true. Even if the land was sold off with a condition that no building or golf courses etc were allowed to be built over it, it is still being lost to us as a place of serenity and beauty once in private hands. As you rightly say, deplorable.

Just to say thanks for highlighting this TSC - I answered this morning briefly as was about to turn my laptop off for the day. Like many, many, people I feel a deep connection with woodland and forests, ancient or otherwise. This government is becoming increasingly despised; I read somwhere they are offering to put the state pension up to £140 ??? What the f*ck is that all about just a few days after they've told everyone they'll basically have to work till they drop - no doubt something to placate the 'baby boomers' as they slip in to retirement. I imagine there are quite a few latent anachists and ex-revolutionaries out there who have both the energy, resources and time to challenge this government in a Big Way (better keep them quiet).

I had a day out today in a lovely and leafy part of the world - the Cotswolds; we were held up by the small picturesque village of Rodmarton by a hunt preparing to set off. They all smiled at us in thanks for 'giving way' (as though we had a choice) - I just felt contempt for them and their 'class'. I'll contact the Woodland Trust in the next day or two and find out what their stance on this is ... and promise this is not just another forum post to be quickly forgotten - this land is my land too. Indeed.

best wishes
tjj

The Tories are having a field day at the moment. They are like very rich kids in a sweet shop. Fulfilling every ideological ambition that has lain dormant since 1997 (dismantling the welfare state and selling off what little the nation still owns) using the deficit as a universal excuse.

This move is particularly low. And I worry what next? Selling off the national parks maybe?

So yes - this does have a bearing on monuments, as once the land is in private hands, it will either be developed or free access barred. I dread to think how much heritage we will lose.

Ta ra for a wee while. back soon!

Well news is what I do, so there is opposition out there, the one lone green party MP Caroline Lucas is speaking out against it, calling it "environmental vandalism" which it is of course.

Fatal Flaw
by Patrick McFarland

We're watching
and we’re waiting
and we’re loving
and we’re hating
as the whore of
greed is slowly
passing by.
Every thief and
every banker lifts
a frosty mug to
thank her while
the widow wipes
the tear beneath
her eye.
And the politician
smiles as the cash
is stacked in piles
while the price of
crude is soaring
to the sky.
And the folks who
rule the planet take
the whole damn
thing for granite
plucking fiddles
while the children
slowly die

Disappointing.

Not exactly surprising - but disappointing, just from the sheer fuckin' inevitability of it all. What a bunch of miserable shits this government are turning out to be.

I rang the Woodland Trust earlier - spoke to the friendly and helpful Emilie Bonnevay in the Supporters section (I did ask for Sue Holden, the Chief Executive but she wasn't available). Emilie sent me the following email and confirmed it was ok to post it on a public forum. See below:

Here is the Trust's press statement regarding the proposed sales of public forest sites:
The Woodland Trust has a number of concerns over the likelihood of a substantially accelerated disposal programme of public forest land. The Trust has long held the view that not all of existing forest estate needs to be held in public ownership, especially those sites whose purpose is primarily the production of timber, or where local community ownership is a viable option.

However, if the Government is determined to be the greenest government ever then it has to find a way to secure the future of ancient woodland sites planted up with conifers over the last 60-70 years. Their restoration is in our view the most significant opportunity open to us for improving the UK’s biodiversity. There are no mechanisms in place to guarantee that if sold to commercial or private interests that restoration will take place.

“Ancient Woodland is our richest and most fragile habitat, our equivalent of the rainforest. Restoring 20,000ha of ancient woodland would be the one of most significant contributions the UK could make to worldwide nature conservation; the proposed sell off must not become a barrier to this significant achievement.“ said Sue Holden, Chief Executive of the Woodland Trust.

The conifers planted in place of native woodland cover many years ago are now reaching economic maturity yet these sites are ancient woods on the brink, retaining against all odds remnants of ancient woodland plants, soils, archaeological features and veteran trees. The opportunity to restore these sites to native woodland is a once in a lifetime opportunity which must be grasped with great urgency

If revenue from these sales does not find its way back into Forestry Commission income streams, which looks likely, it could seriously threaten FC’s ability to support the future planting of new native woodland, which is a major priority for us and for Government response to the climate change agenda, as well as into restoration of planted ancient woods.

The Trust also has concerns that not all public forest land has yet been dedicated under the Countryside and Rights of Way act 2000 for permanent public access; this applies to sites where the FC holds the leasehold rather than the freehold. Prior to disposals of land, public access needs to be safeguarded.

I hope this is helpful for now. We are following this rapidly evolving topic closely and will be sure to keep our supporters up to date with more details and any actions they can take when we know more.

I don't know if this has already been posted but there's an online petition here.

OK I know it's off topic for here but since we're talking about it already.....
Sea Cat has posted next door how our unelected Tory government is reversing animal welfare moves across the board http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/forum/?thread=60425

It's all a bit hard to appreciate en masse but when you get down to individual creatures it's different: the legislation will mean Anne (who was in a town near me recently and prompted protests, as she always does wherever she goes), 52 years old, arthritic, in captivity for 47 years, the last elephant left in Britain still touring with a circus (Bobby Roberts'), will carry on being shipped from town to town and spending most of her time chained up in fields.

Very much part of the same issue - the Peak District National Park has put the Roaches up for sale. Was discussed in yesterday's edition of Countryfile with Matt Baker sounding the alarm for a place he clearly loves.

Apologies in advance if something similar to this has already been posted; here is the letter of response by the Ramblers Association to the above issue.

Ramblers urge government to protect access to British woodland

4 November 2010

Today (4 November), Britain’s walking charity seeks assurances from the government that the sale of Forestry Commission land will only go ahead if public access is guaranteed.

Whilst not all land accessed by the public must be publically owned, it is vital that any sale of Forestry Commission land be carefully managed, with public access as a top priority, the Ramblers warns. The change in ownership of Forestry land need not be negative, particularly if it enables community groups to take a more active involvement in their local woodland, but it is imperative that everyone’s ability to continue to access and enjoy British woodland is at the forefront of any sale agreement.

Today the Ramblers highlights five key criteria which it urges the government to meet before any sale of Forestry Commission land is considered. The criteria are that:

1) Public access is maintained and enhanced.
2) Public rights of way and access land are properly managed.
3) No sale or transfer is completed until the purchaser has committed to preserving and maintaining access.
4) Where access is currently not secured in law, this is remedied through CROW act dedication¹.
5) The local community is consulted and given the opportunity to play a full and active part in woodland management, including first-refusal on purchase.

These moves would ensure that we could all continue to benefit from visiting and enjoying British woodland without hindrance or difficulty and protect the right to access these forests for future generations.

Tom Franklin, Ramblers Chief Executive, says:
“There is nothing more reviving than a walk through British woodland in the autumn. Who owns the land is not as important as how they are managed and the fact that public access to our forests is preserved.

“We are seeking assurances from government that guaranteed public access will be a prerequisite of any sale so that we can all continue to enjoy a woodland walk, and that the right to access British forests will be protected for future generations.”

Notes to editors:
1. Under section 16 of The Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 any land can be dedicated as open access land giving the public the right of access on foot. http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2000/37/section/16

Voting today

http://www.38degrees.org.uk/page/speakout/MP-forests

This is getting too predictable, sorry. Well they may have backed off, for the moment, re. the Forests, but now it seems they're after a smaller prize - our allotments. We've had them and been using them since Saxon times. Very soon, the ability for many people to enjoy growing their own produce, and therefore helping the environment etc, will be gone... IF they get their way.
The Green Tories..... A contradiction in terms is an understatement, and you can't overstate the insulting contempt of this Government.
