My tack is thussage: When i receive a *cold 'phone call* As soon as the op takes a breath to continue their poorly scripted diatribe I shut them up in this manner "This number is ex-directory"

That shuts the fLickers up!

"Oh, I do apologise sir"

Saw a good one on (I think) Seinfeld.
When you can get a word in, say to the caller that you ARE interested but are very busy right now. Ask them for their home phone number so you can ring them to discuss it properly at a more convenient time. If they're not keen on you ringing them at home, say "Welcome to the club", and hang up.

Works for me !
