No, YOU haven't got it wrong - they have. Saddam was a puppet-in-the-pocket-politician gone wrong, but rather than learning by their mistakes, they thought they'd do it again! A Dictator didn't work so well so they thought they'd give 'democracy' a go. Basically they misjudged everything and everyone involved big time. Again.
