Morrissey

I just left a Smith/Morrissey Facebook page. As much as I liked the Smiths, I kept getting annoyed by Morrissey's soundbites, but him supporting outright Fascism is the last straw! I've totally lost interest in him. I can't even listen to the Smiths anymore at that...

Its a genuine quandary. I love the first few Smiths albums, but obviously abhor the views that Morrissey is now promulgating.

As far as I'm concerned Morrissey died tragically in a plane crash in the 1990s. It was such a shame to lose such a wonderful artist so young. The posthumous release of "You Are The Quarry" was a suitable way to say goodbye to his fans...

(I have to tell myself that so I can keep those Smiths records precious).

Poor Morrissey.

Pretty good article in today's Guardian that seems to sum it up.

"Freedom of speech means the freedom for someone to say something you disagree with. If you don't believe in that, then you don't believe in freedom of speech."

I remember the fuss over "Suffer Little Children" and the utterly horrific crap which was thrown at Morrissey for it. Then the papers realised the Lesley Ann and Keith's mums really approved of the song and had regularly visited Morrissey. Lesley Ann's mum thought "Suffer Little Children" was very touching. The press had completely got the wrong end of the stick. Completely and deliberately. They hadn't even read the lyrics of a song they described as "evil".

"'Morrissey does this and Morrissey says that and Morrissey believes... and nobody asked me a thing. Nobody knew what I believed ..'
- Morrissey

Can you give exact quotes of what exactly Morrissey has said that you don't agree with. Actual quote and source. All the extreme racist stuff. Then we can read what you are on about.

I'm not going to call him racist but he's always been a twat who's never actually bothered to understand the drivel he actually spouts:

“The modern Loony Left seem to forget that Hitler was Left wing! But of course, we are all called racist now, and the word is actually meaningless." Since when and where? Only planet Twat do people think that. Population of Planet Twat? One person named Morrissey! This is pretty much the same response given by every racist person I know, basically it's a drab attempt to undermine the discussion. It never works!

“Both [Labour and Conservative] parties support halal slaughter, which, as we all know, is evil. Furthermore, halal slaughter requires certification that can only be given by supporters of Isis, and yet in England we have halal meat served in hospitals and schools!” There was testing done in 2009, as I recall, by a German university who proved that Halal method is more humane than battery method. If he gave a shit what he was talking about he'd have bothered to look that up, it's on the internet!

Morrissey has always been a Grade A wanker, this is just another of his bullshitty attempts to try and be controversial and, as usual, just looking an ill-informed Twat!

I can't defend Morrissey's extremist tendency and wouldn't try to, but I remain a fan of much of his music. Like him or loathe him, the man has been a mass of contradictions for 37 years and seems to thrive on surfing the bounds of respectability and political correctness. Whether or not I believe, agree or disagree with his blather, I'm used to it. And like all of us he's entitled to his opinions, however questionable they might be.

If being righteous was a condition of the artists I chose to listen to, I'd have a pretty small record collection. For my own part I still get pleasure from Morrissey's voice and muse, whatever stance he chooses to project.

This a very fine interview. His phrase "Rear Cleavage" on Larry King really takes this to a new level.
