Stop Nick Griffin

close

The BNP are poised to have their leader, convicted racist Nick Griffin, elected as an MEP. The campaign to stop him is well underway.

Especially urgent (they need the dosh by the end of today) is the campaign to get £8k so they can put ads in the Liverpool Echo and Manchester Evening News to counter the coverage the BNP have been getting.

Even if you don't live in the area, you can donate dosh. And get anyone you know wherever they are - but especially in the BNP's target areas of East Midlands, Yorkshire and Humber, West Midlands and North West - to vote for a party likely to score more than the BNP.

Will definately make the effort to go and vote Green this year then Merrick. Far more value to that than spoiling my paper.

Did you watch their election broadcast last night? You couldn't call it slick. Or even coherently edited. Seemed like it was shot on someone's Nokia. Also the body language looked like the result of a media training crash course that had gone a bit wrong. Perhaps it's all a subtle ruse to make people who might be tempted to vote strategically against them not take them seriously. That or they don't have quite as much money in their fighting fund as some think. Thought it was interesting that Have I Got News For You singled him out for ridicule just a couple of hours later.

Then again if they couldn't make it work after their 16% showing in West Brom in 73 and the Three Day Week etc you wonder if the far right will ever catch a wave here. There's always a lurch when Labour are hapless and the Tories are especially weak chinned and hunting for middle ground. Then a lurch back.

That video on how the votes are counted is very illuminating and persuasive.
I had one of their scummy leaflets through the door, it would have been laughable if you weren't scared that people might actually vote for them.

And did you see the thing about "What would Jesus do?" on some of ther leaflets (the implication being that Jesus - JESUS - would vote BNP). You couldn't make it up.

I've written a short piece urging a vote against the BNP. I've put it up as the new News item in U-Know, but I think it's a tad more effective on my blog where it's got proper links and the picture of Griffin in a White Power T-shirt.

Please feel free to send the link on and/or cut&paste it anywhere and everywhere.

gurftyjim is talking horseshit I'm afraid.

Only in London and the SE (neither regions where the Nazis pose a serious threat) can the Greens get anyone elected. In the NW the Greens are trying a decent spin campaign, but everywhere else, the Greens are a wasted vote as they don't stand a chance of beating the Nazis or winning a seat.

In the NW, Yorkshire and E/W Midlands, which are the four most critical regions (not to mention the SW where the risk of Nazi MEPs is less but still there), most people on here should vote Liberal Democrat to keep the BNP out. If you can't bring yourself to do that it's the fruitcakes of UKIP I'm afraid.

The trouble with European elections is that - because people are more likely to vote for fringe parties - opinion polls are more meaningless than they are in other elections.

In the South East (the region I live in) it is very likely that of the 10 seats there will be at least 4 Tories, 2 Lib Dems, 1 Labour, 1 Green and 1 UKIP. It could boil down to a race between the 5th Tory, 2nd UKIP and BNP.

In London the Lib Dems were a handful of votes away from a second MEP last time, with no chance at all of the Greens getting a second. In the South-West again a second Lib Dem was much more likely than a Green. In the North West last time it was a second Lib Dem who got the last seat, just pipping the BNP.

So basically swinging 3 per cent of the vote *does* make a considerable amount of odds, and it does matter who that vote swings to. In the four regions above, at least, there is little or no point voting Green 'to keep the BNP out'.

It's not often I praise the Daily Mirror but it seems they've put a lot of effort (and dosh) in warning against voting BNP. I've had a free info-paper through my door with several articles denouncing the BNP and a piece by Eddie Izzard plus a couple of days ago there were people in town distributing leaflets produced by the Mirror along similar lines. The Manchester Evening News has been running a concerted anti-BNP campaign in the run up to the voting too.

The cynical among us may wish to see this as a mere promotional exercise but even if that's so, I can live with that under the circumstances.

christ, the English Democrats (aka BNP lite) have taken the mayor of Doncaster!

I almost wish it really was North Yorkshire that had developed that bomb now

Monster Raving Lonny Party beat Labour into fourth

Can anyone tell me the results overall in the election? I hope the BNP didn't win any seats, of course...

cunts cunts fucking cunts.

Arse! Very disappointing and particularly unwelcome as it was up here in the North West that the BNP got the votes.

Realistically, they probably haven't got enough clout to directly influence policy but they do now have a fairly lofty perch from which to spew their bile.

The irony of it is they actually did worse than 5 years ago - the meltdown in Labour's vote gave them what they needed. Fuckbags and pooballs!

In other news, the Pirate Party wins a seat.

I can't say that I'm all that surprised the BNP won a couple of seats after the huge levels of attention and publicitoxygen they were given. What freezes my blood is the thought of the onward march of the Tories. When the public services get raped by the toff bastards I really won't be giving a shit about Nick Griffin.

Apologies if this has been posted previously, I'm in a hurry at work and haven't time to check the whole thread.

It's not much, but it's not nothing.
