Yes siree folks, it's that time again. Having idly browsed through the polls conducted by Mojo, Uncut, the Wire and Q on the shelves of WHSmiths I've found that - as usual - only three or four of my faves seem to have registered with the critical establishment. Hopefully if HHers vote for their faves here, it might turn others on the forum on to one or two acts they might not have heard of/checked out otherwise, so here are my nominations:

1. Gonjasufi - A Sufi and a Killer
2. Liars - Sisterworld
3. Tame Impala - Innerspeaker
4. MGMT - Congratulations
5. White Hills - s/t
6. Holy Fuck - Latin
7. Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Before Today
8. Skream - Outside the Box
9. Steve Mason - Boys Outside
10.Hot Chip - One Life Stand
11.LCD Soundsystem - This is Happening
12.Caribou - Swim

In no particular order ....

Anais Mitchell et al - Hadestown Folk Opera
Black Crowes - Croweology
Black Tempest - Proxima / Ex-Proxima
Broken Social Scene - Forgiveness Rock Record
El Trío De Omar Rodríguez-López - Ciencia De Los Inútiles
Eno - Lovely Bones Unreleased Score
Erykah Badu - New Amerykah Part Two (Return Of The Ankh)
Jim Moray - In Modern History
Mushroom - Naked, Stoned, & Stabbed
Omar Rodriguez Lopez Quartet - Sepulcros De Miel
Robyn - Body Talk Vol 1
Rufus Wainwright - All Days Are Nights: Songs For Lulu
Samuel Katarro - The Halfduck Mystery
UNITE - A Gathering Of Strangers

Not really had the spare disposables to pick that much up but i've enjoyed...

Electric Wizard - Black Masses
Wolf People - Steeple
Black Angels - Phosphene Dream
Book of Shadows - Chichen Itza

Glad they're still making music but not albums of the year section:

Hawkwind - Blood of the Earth (but ffs, stop covering yourself!)
Brian Jonestown Massacre - Who Killed Sgt. Pepper?
The Fall - Your Future Our Clutter

Pretty underwhelmed and prefer the earlier versions of the old stuff but glad he's getting some money out of it:

Roky.

In alphabetic order:

01. Belle and Sebastian - Write About Love
02. Casiotone For The Painfully Alone - Advance Base Battery Life
03. David Sylvian - Sleepwalkers
04. Jeremy Jay - Splash
05. Lula Pena - Troubadour
06. Maria Gadú - Multishow ao Vivo
07. Nina Becker - Azul
08. Perfume Genius - Learning
09. The Divine Comedy - Bang Goes The Knightwood
10. The Divine Comedy - Live At Somerset House

I supose.

I usually find out my favourites of the year long after it's been and gone. Mo' powah to the guys swooping up every new release and filtering out the good from the bad, but I'm pretty finicky about not subjecting myself to too much stuff I probably won't like. It's far easier (and safer, I guess) to only hear the gems in retrospect. The "right now is the place and time" element doesn't interest me too much, either. That said, I do listen to a fair bit of new stuff all the same.

Here's a rough Top 10, in no particular order:

Big Blood - Dark Country Magic
Won James Won - Corpus Unhearmeticum
Hamid Drake & Bindu - Reggaeology
Lil B - Rain in England
Circle - Rautatie
Little Women - Throat
Gigi - Maintenant
Kemialliset Ystävät - Ullakkopalo
Prince Rama of Ayodhya & The Great Valley - Divine/Journey
Tsigoti - Private Poverty Speaks to the People of the Party
Janelle Monáe - The ArchAndroid
Pan Sonic & Keiji Haino - Synergy Between Mercy and Self-Annihilation Overturned
Midori - Shinsekai

Putting up a comprehensive list next week on me blog.

But here's a few of my fave albums of the year.

Archie Bronson Outfit – ‘Coconut’

Beach House – ‘Teen Dreams’

Besnard Lakes, The – ‘The Besnard Lakes Are The Roaring Night’

Dear, Matthew – ‘Black City’

Foster, Josephine & The Victor Herrero Band – ‘Anda Jaleo’

There's no way on God's Earth I could narrow down this (or any year) to a Top 10. The main reason being that I've bought so much this year I can't keep track of it all, let alone choose only 10.

So... I'm just going to lurk on others' posts with interest and stroke my goatee sagely whilst nodding at the impeccable taste you've all got. Sorry.

Absolutely fantastic year, imo.

I've been keeping track of the best releases this year w/ a list on RYM.

http://rateyourmusic.com/list/Eye_Shaking_King/best_of_2010

It's currently 75 albums long, so I'll just post the link instead of the list itself. I'll post a shorter top 25 or something when I have more time.

Haven't bought that much new stuff this year (limited funds etc.), but from what i managed to hear...

*Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Before Today (wonderful mid-fi, warm-n-fuzzy psychedelic pop with an interesting, if divisive, 80's slant - one of his best albums)
*Field Music - Measure (not a very HH-type album, but great, unpredictable prog/funk/chamber-pop - at least one of the brothers has a classical background and it shows in the ornate arrangements, also superb live in Liverpool)
*Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest (saw these guys play a blistering set in Manchester before the album came out - clearly indebted to 90's shoegaze/lo-fi indie, but with some superb songs and personality(?) to back it up)
*Owen Pallett - Heartland (again, not for everyone, orchestral pop of the mannered, slightly pretentious variety, but when it works, it's magical)
*Here We Go Magic - Pigeons (didn't really live up to their addictive debut, but a handful of the songs are still among my year's best)
*Julian Lynch - Mare (charming, sleepy drone-pop, took a bit of getting into but well worth the perseverance)
*Beach House - Teen Dream (stunning on first listen, but ended up feeling a bit cold and mannered (very 'hipster'-ish(?!)) - still some fine tracks, mind)
*Robyn Hitchcock - Propellor Time (a grab-bag of leftover tracks from the Venus 3 sessions a few years ago - doesn't hang together as an album but entertaining all the same (again, great live in Liverpool too!))

Haven't heard the new Robert Wyatt collab yet, but hopefully that will be of a similar standard.

I might have to edit and add to this list, because I've heard so many great new records and CDs this year. I think this has been a truly vintage year for music - I can't remember a year for a long time where I've listened almost excusively to new recordings as opposed to digging into the archives.

Carol Anne McGowan - Songs From The Cellar
Spaceship - Out Of Time's Abyss
Stormhat - From The Moat
Susan Matthews & Clutter - Silence Alight

And heartfelt thanks to the couple of you who have mentioned Proxima and Ex Proxima, I'm chuffed. I never thought I'd be in a top ten list 8-)

*edit ... gradually remembering or acquiring more and more that I liked from this year

A good year for musick this one... my list -

Wolf People/ Steeple

Sabbath Assembly/ Restored to One

Circle/ Rautatie

Teeth of the Sea/ Your Mercury

Grasscut/ 1 Inch/1/2 Mile

Black Angels/Phosphene Dream

Sun City Girls/ Funeral Mariachi

Electric Wizard/ Black Masses

Sleepy Sun/ Fever

Black Tempest/ Ex Proxima

Moon Duo/ Escape

Hawkwind/ Blood of the Earth

Arp/ The Soft Wave

White Hills/ ST

Endless Boogie/ Full House Head

Emeralds/ Does it Look Like I'm Here

Probably a couple others I'm forgetting but are worthy.

Disappointment of the year was the album Pharoah Overload issued in '10... its ok overall I suppose, a bit disjointed, but has nothing of the signature PO sound left. A radical departure that left me a little bummed.

I've had a quick flick through NME and Q: I have 2 of the NME's choices - Swans and The Fall; none from Q

The standout album in 2010 was The Wants by The Phantom Band

think I'll bugger off and become a Q reader, not heard of half the bands mentioneed here, must be getting old

my rather pedestrian list

Black Tempest -Proxima/Ex Proxima always liked your music Mr S but you really hit the nail on the head with these two, most anticipated cd of 2011 is the next one

Spaceship - Out Of Time's Abyss surprised this didn't make more peoples list, an absolute stormer

Neil Young - Le Noise glad I stuck with this, first listen decided it was a bit of a worthy but dull experiment, luckily I got stuck with this 1cd and a long journey and repeated listens made me fall in love with it

Robert Plant - Band of JOy probably too dadrock for your average HH punter but I love this to bits

Faust Is Last thanks to Keith A for pointing me at this one, the fact that I think this rates with the best of Faust shows how good it is

Swans -My Father Will Guide Me Up A Rope To The Sky matches with the Children Of God period, a welcome return and addition to the Swans catalogue, supposedly the live shows were even better

Mono - Holy Ground having lived in the postrock second division for a while they finally acheived a premier div place with this gem

Pantha Du Prince - Black Noise I have no idea what this is, some kinda minmal dance music, but it's beautiful, I keep meaning to open a thread to inquire about what bthis is and is there anything else like it

Crippled Black Phoenix - I,Vigilante this years no1 postrock Floyd impersonators

Current 93 - Baalstorm,Sing Omega also voted as this years worst CD by the rest of mu family who seem to loathe David Tibet with a vengeance

Max Richter - Infra short but sweet, I've heard a fair bit of mainstream but slightly alt modern classical type thing, but on a tunes vs time scale this is a winner

Cathedral - Guessing Game the purists moan about Cathedral no longer being Doom incarnate, but who cares with music this goos, far better than the Trytykon cd

Buzz or Howl - Turquoise Studded Child of the 8 Armed Elephant Bride title of the year, sprawling 3cd set of varied ambient guitar drone, another Lotus House winner

Have to confess to not having heard much new music this year. Maybe it's my time of life, or the fact that it's been such a lousy year in every other respect that I've drawn succour from tried and tested old aural friends. Whatever, the following have impressed me greatly:

Johnny Cash 'Ain't No Grave' (far from the barrel scraping exercise this could have been);
Clive Gregson 'Forward Into Reverse' (proving the man's outtakes to be at least as strong as his released output);
Paul Weller 'Wake Up The Nation' (Weller by numbers perhaps, and nothing like as inventive as '22 Dreams', but there's real staying power in these songs);
Urs Leimgruber & Evan Parker 'Twine' (where two stellar sax improvisers create a mesmerising racket at once both heavenly and unheavenly. Clear the vermin from your house with this!);
Eels 'Tomorrow Morning' (delicate songs from a contented - for once - Mr E);
Richard Thompson 'Dream Attic' (typically brilliant songs from a man at the top of his art - and dig that anti-Sting jibe);
Wyatt/Atzmon/Stephen 'For The Ghosts Within' (just lovely. Nuff said);
Elton John & Leon Russell 'The Union' (where the presence of a hero inspires old Reg to make his best album in decades);
Neil Young 'Le Noise' (over-produced in places, but Shakey's still on song in this unaccompanied yet electric - and often electrifying - new album);
Airbourne 'No Guts, No Glory' (cliched, sexist, offensive and predictable AC/DC ripoff metal. Thoroughly entertaining!).

Honourable mentions for these especially impressive remasters:

Deep Purple 'Come Taste The Band' (my favourite release of the year, for what it's worth);
Wigwam 'Being';
John & Yoko 'Some Time In New York City';
Soft Machine 'Bundles', 'Softs' and 'Land Of Cockaigne';
Thin Lizzy 'Thin Lizzy' 'Shades Of A Blue Orphanage' and 'Vagabonds Of The Western World';
David Bowie 'David Bowie' (i.e., the Deram debut);
Jackson Heights 'Bump'n'Grind';
James Taylor 'James Taylor';
and the stunning 180g vinyl reissue of The Doors 'Absolutely Live'.

Two fine box set anthologies worth anyone's money: Caravan's 'The World Is Yours' and Kevin Coyne's 'I Want My Crown'. English rock never got more distinctive than this. I'll no doubt want to include the massive Sandy Denny box as well, but I've only just bought it and there's a lot to take in!

White Hills - S/T
Teeth Of The Sea - Hypnoticon [12"]
White Pee - Wing Off A Plane
Teardrop Explodes - Kilimanjaro[Reissue 3 cd]
Sun Dial - S/T
Spaceship - Out Of Time's Abyss
David Wrench - Spades & Hoes & Plows
Gnod/White Hills - Gnod Drop Out With White Hills II
Congregacion - Viene [Reissue]

Feels like a fantastic year for music, though I may have just been paying a little more attention recently - and being active again on HH has made a big difference, some great recommendations.

Would have struggled to come up with a top ten for most years of the 00s, but for 2010, ten isn't enough:

1) These New Puritans - Hidden
2) Field Music - Measure (I reckon their baroque pop-prog would actually appeal to quite a few HHers - strong elements of Hammill and 80s King Crimson in here)
3) Magic Lantern - Platoon
4) Jane Weaver - The Fallen By Watchbird
5) Anta - The Tree That Bears The Equine Fruit (thanks in particular to whoever recommended this in the modern prog thread - a real grower)
6) Sun Araw - On Patrol
7) Klaxons - Surfing The Void
8) Bear In Heaven - Beast Rest Forth Mouth (technically 2009, but only got an official UK release this year)
9) Crippled Black Phoenix - I, Vigilante
10) Forest Swords - Dagger Paths
11) Motorpsycho - Heavy Metal Fruit
12) Tame Impala - Innerspeaker
13) Dungen - Skit I Allt
14) Voice Of The Seven Thunders - S/T
15) Majeure - Timespan

Plus honourable mentions for MGMT - Congratulations & Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma.

No doubt changes to this order and additions will be made over the coming months... have the new Eno, Third Eye Foundation and Salem albums on the way for Christmas

Would love to hear the new Sandy Denny boxset too, hmm, but need to get a PS3 to play Gran Turismo 5, sadly the vicarious thrills of the game will likely win out.

Er, and have probably forgotten a few things that should have been included in the above too ( and apologies if any of them were 2009 releases ! )

Edit - Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Before Today - haven't heard this but looking at your lists it seems that i probably should.

LCD Soundsystem - The London Sessions
Frightened Rabbit - The Winter Of Mixed Drinks
The Phantom Band - The Wants
Chew Lips - Unicorn
Edwyn Collins - Losing Sleep

:o)

Just found out that the stage times for Frightened Rabbit and Edwyn Collins clash at ATP this weekend. Not good. Also, Best Coast play at 6:00 on Friday! Also not good!!

Not a year I have got passionate about music or books really. Having a five year old go to primary school and my little girl starting to walk have really been too much of a distraction!
But I have enjoyed these admittedly Pitchforkmedia friendly releases

Gonjasufi - A Sufi and a Killer
Pantha du Prince - Black Noise
Julian Lynch - Mare
Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma
Bo Ningen - Bo Ningen

Belatedly checking out The Phantom Band - the wants

and these comps have shown the way to put music together

- Pomegranates: Persian Pop, Funk, Folk and Psych of the 60s and 70s (Finders Keepers)
- DEUTSCHE ELEKTRONISCHE MUSIK- EXPERIMENTAL GERMAN ROCK AND ELECTRONIC MUSIC 1972-83 (Souljazz Records)

Another comp I probably should have checked but not got around to -

Sleepwalkers by David Sylvian

Fave Live date of the year -

Seeing Iggy and the stooges at Hammersmith Apollo

What a great thread! On the back of reading the first few posts I've bought and fallen in love with the Wolf People album.

For my part... not a great deal to report as I've had quite a backward-looking year in the music I've been listening to, but here's the new ones I've spinning a lot:

Laura Veirs - July Flame
QA'A - Chi'en
Underworld - Barking
Wooden Shjips - Vol. 2
The Movements - The World, the Flesh and the Devil
Melissa Auf der Maur - Out of Our Minds
Ellen Allien - Dust
David Wrench - Spades & Hoes & Plows
Bonobo - Black Sands
Arcade Fire - The Suburbs

D.O.Misiani & Shirati Jazz King Of History (compilation of 60s & 70s material but finally released this year so some of the greatest music ever is now readily available)

Electric Wizard Black Masses (nice sludgy psychedelicity)

Wolf People Steeple

Warpaint The Fool (nice psych orientated new Wavey all woman band)

Grinderman 2

Swans My Father Will Guide Me & The Koko live set.

sure there were others but can't think what.
Stevo

Sound System Scratch: Lee Perry's Dub Plate Mixes '73-79

My top 10 though in no particular order:

Teeth of the Sea – Your Mercury
Teeth of the Sea – Hypnoticon

White Hills – S/T
Barn Owl – Ancestral Star
David Wrench – Spades & Hoes & Plows
Master Musicians of Bukkake – Totem 2
People of the North – Deep Tissue
Rangda – False Flag
To Blacken the Pages & Korperschwache – A Way Dark (may be 2009 actually!)

And still quite a few I’d like to hear from previous stuff I have or recommendations on here e.g. Wildildlife, Sun Araw, Korperschwache, Voice of the Seven Thunders, Holy Sons etc.

In terms of old music new to me this year, a big thanks to Rob Young’s book Electric Eden for Comus (First Utterance), Incredible string band and late Talk Talk/Mark Hollis stuff.

Well here it is, for what its worth, my final choice list of 2010 for Monolith Cocktail.

I've posted it in two parts, and all the albums are listed in alphabetical order. If you click on each LPs artwork you will be taken to the full review.

Disappointment:
Freebass' awful album (not a surprise as such) and the Goldfrapp album, after how good their last one was.

My thoughts on some of the best albums from 2010.

Enjoying this thread, listening to a lot of stuff I would never otherwise hear via your mentions and youtube.

My (rather conservative) votes go to

Monster Magnet - Mastermind
Dragontears - 2000 Micrograms from home
Motorhead - The World Is Yours
Hawkwind - Blood of the Earth

Best Reissue
Uriah Heep - Salisbury

I found out about Dragontears from a mention on these boards.

Kinda like a "Monster Magnet" Lite - crap description, but I don't know what else to say

their myspace is here

I'm struggling to put together a list for this year. I've bought a lot of music, much of it has been old stuff either remasters or filling gaps in my collection. From those new sounds this year I have liked the following (no particular order)

Spaceship - Out of Time's Abyss

Wooden Shjips - Vol 2

MV & EE - so many to choose from this year, but probably "Liberty Rose" cos it's just perfect and the live "Trossachs" set from glasgow, cos it was a great show to be at.

Swans - My father will guide me up a rope

Neil Young - Le Noise - almost didn;t buy this, but glad i did

Joanna Newsom - Have one on me

VA - Deutsche Electronische Musik

PTV3 - Alien Brain vs Maggot Brain

Moon Duo - Escape

Probably add David Wrench Ploughs/hoes etc although it's not an easy listen, but i do love his voice.

I'm still trying to digest and assess the 50+ new release albums I've acquired this year- not counting old stuff, or the promos I got sent but decided weren't for me and took to a charity shop after one listen. There's also a whole load of stuff- most of the stuff raved about by people on here and on other respected music sites- that I haven't even heard yet. At the moment though,

Phantom- Smoke and Mirrors
Sound Carriers- Celeste
Wolf People- Steeple

look unlikely to be dislodged from the top 3 spot. Will post more fully when I feel able.

I like what I've heard from that Ariel Pink as well as Women's Public Strain (kind of a Sonic Youth deal with Zombies-ish vox). Wasn't too into the Arcade Fire apart from a few songs. I kind of like what I've heard of that MGMT, actually. As for metal, the Burzum grew on me quite a bit. Not his best by a long shot, but worthy of the name and worth listening to. I really liked Demontage's (Canada) "The Principal Extinction." Kind of a cross between weird 80s heavy metal (Brocas Helm, Manilla Road, Mercyful Fate) and the Czech black metal bands (Master's Hammer, Root). Check it out. I also liked what I've heard of the Atlantean Kodex, which was more of an epic/doom metal thing, like early Candlemass meets early Manowar or something. I liked the Zuul album for hard rockin' nwobhm throwback worship.

Other than that, I've mostly been listening to old stuff.

Finally managed to narrow down the RYM list I posted earlier (http://rateyourmusic.com/list/Eye_Shaking_King/best_of_2010) from 90+ entries to just under 40.

So here it is, in pictorial form, my Top 39 albums of 2010:

http://static.rateyourmusic.com/lk/l/u/f3da6452af6111c4c6ed8c3ef643ecfb/3479876.jpg

Album of the year for me was 'Here Lies Love' by David Byrne (ably assisted by Fat Boy Slim and a host of vocalists). If anyone could pull off a double-album of dancey tracks relating the story of Imelda Marcos, it's Byrne.

Other notable releases this year from my point of view...

Brian Eno - "Small Craft on a Milk Sea"
Arcade Fire - "The Suburbs"
David Bowie - "Reality Live"
The Legendary Pink Dots - "Seconds Late For The Brighton Line"

Also really enjoyed Atticus Ross & Trent Reznor's soundtrack to The Social Network (though haven't seen the film) and Warren Ellis & Nick Cave's soundtrack to The Road (which I did see and thought was excellent though flawed).

Probably forgetting some others, but in truth 2010 was very much a year in which I listened to more old favourites than new releases.

I loved all these...

1. Parting Gifts - Strychnine Dandelion
2. Liminanas - st
3. Timmy's Organism - Rise of the Green Gorilla
4. The Black Jaspers - The Black Jaspers
5. The White Wires - WWII

Just one for me:

Motorpsycho - Heavy Metal Fruit

Four Tet - There Is Love In You
Massive Attack - Heligoland
Black Tempest - Ex Proxima
Underworld - Barking

Best new release Black Country Communion a stunning old school release that highlights exactly why Glenn Hughes should have been Deep Purples lead vocalist not Coverdale (although I do like DC's work with Purple)
Best reissue Come Taste the Band

All the best

Can I make a late vote for...

The Orb & David Gilmour "Metallic Sphere"?
