If ever there was a truly neglected and criminally UNSUNG band, this must truly be it. My Lords, Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys, Girls and staff; I give you the utterly brilliant Monochrome Set:

All my records by them are up in the loft on vinyl. I'd somehow forgotten all about them until I put in an old compilation CD that Eardrum sent me yonks ago. Thanks Eardrum, for bringing it all back to me!

You may then love this insightful interview:

There are many great Cherry Red TV interviews with Ian McNay & others, all geared toward musical heads.

I love 'em, and can only give them hearty recommendation to anyone who hasn't heard them before.

Unfortunately there's no perfect compilation to suggest as an introduction, so I'd say that the uninitiated should try either Tomorrow Will Be Too Long, which compiles the first two albums, or Eligible Bachelors, which is the third and probably most accomplished of the first Square era.

I had a friend who thought they were called the monochrome fet. Because of the gothic typeface they used!,

Loved 'em but only saw 'em the once at LSE around 1983/84. Fantastic!
I believe Bid now fronts a band called "Charlottes Well" although this could be very old news as I don't get out much now. =;o(

Oh, I love 'em, and have done ever since 'Strange Boutique' charmed my lobes thirty years ago. But then, I was always going to love a post-punk outfit with a real strong Canterbury vibe. I've always thought that Bid must have LOVED the first four Caravan LPs. No bad thing in my book.

I dig all their output, but most especially 'Love Zombies' and the Peel sessions collated on 'Volume, Brilliance, Contrast'. Foot tapping, rib-tickling excellence.

This very evening, in Stourbridge, I will see them for the first time. For all those decades, the planets (and my diary) have failed to align, until this momentus day. Please don't let them be crap.
