NWOBHM

Um, Kansas (& Styx I think) had been around for years by the time of the NWOBHM etc. Kansas were definitely prog for their first several albums. Styx slightly less so from the little I've heard.

Boston just weren't proggy, they were just melodic hard rock (possibly inventing aor, along with Journey). The odd keyboard intro doesn't make it prog!!! Lol!

Styx was extremely prog in the early days -- first LP was 1972, didn't have a hit until 1975 and peaked in popularity around 1981.

Sort of like suburban boogie rock with the artistic aspirations of Yes or Genesis -- not much to do with metal, though they had a pair of hotshot guitar players.
