I think Alison Moyet's voice is under rated. Its wonderful.

Always loved Colin Verncombe's voice too.

Yep, agree with many of you, Cathal Cougan.

Mr Cope (though not at present, cough).

Oh and the girly in All About Eve. Lovely voice.

Mel C is "Sporty Spice" right? I totally agree, she had 95% of the talent in that band.

My favorite vocalist bar-none is: TOM JONES!

For pure pop stylings -- I also swear by Micky Dolenz (though Mike is the Monkee I am probably most like myself, my greatest fear is that I might really be a Peter, and I only *dream* that I could aspire to the coolness of Micky!!! I've not much use for David Jones I'm afraid.)

John Garner & Rob Halford are as good as RAWK singing gets. And I'll take Ian Gillan over Percy Plant in the "technically awesome soul-less robot shrieker" category.

Favorite chick singer is probably Grace Slick. And lately I am in awe of Yoko Ono as well, though she's in a class all by herself! (It's almost not fair to call it "singing", which I don't mean as an insult at all. She's Kerry King without the guitar!)

Not much for subtlety am I? I'm really more into the instrumental bits, so I guess I gravitate to singers whose voices have an overwhelming "instrumental presence"!

In no particular order;

Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance)
Ian Curtis
Adrian Belew (I SWOON on Matte Kudasai)
Syd Barrett
David Bowie
Liz Fraser
Petula Clark
Freddie Mercury
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
Nick Cave
Marvin Gaye

Iggy
Bowie
Scott

(they go without saying really...)

Jacques Brel
Simon Bonney
Jeff Buckley
Terry Reid
Levi Stubbs

...and the two lovely ladies from the B52's who still possess the most sultry & sexy voices known to mankind

I don't actually like many women vocalists, but these are some the the very few I rate:
Ella Fitzgerald
Judie Tzuke
Karen Carpenter
Natasha Atlas
Sandy Denny
Lulu

And of the blokes, these few immediately spring to mind though I bet I've forgotten some obvious ones:
Paul Rodgers
Marvin Gaye
Michael Jackson (when he was pre-pubescent)
Ian Gillan
Tom Jones
Roger Daltrey
Seal
Steve Perry

I'm also unfeasibly fond of:
Nick Drake
John Martyn
Neil Young
Though none of them what you'd call 'great' voices.

For me it's

Nina Simone
Marvin Gaye
Stevie Wonder
Johnny Cash
Danny Williams
Billie Holliday
Bettye LaVette
Sia Furler

There's bound to be loads more that I've forgotten.

Oooo, today's pick would include.....

Nusrat Fatah Ali Khan
Richard Hell
Iggy Pop
Lou Reed
Julian Cope
John Martyn
Sandy Denny
Marc Bolan
Alex Harvey
Brian Ferry
Curtis Mayfield
Otis Redding
Captain Beefheart ( couldn't believe it when I heard Howlin' Wolf, mind )
Bob Marley

Not overly keen on female vocalists, dunno why, and deffo no screaming metal merchants ( no names mentioned )

Oh, seems that I'm very much a child of the 70's !

Edit - seem to have forgot Ian Curtis and Mark E Smith. Dunno how I forgot NEKO CASE either !!!

Kristin Hersh
Cathal Coughlan
Tanya Donelly
Lemmy
Fay Fife
That bloke from the Teardrop Explodes
Mayumi

I always think there's a difference between a "singer" and a "vocalist"...hard to define, but Elvis Costello is a vocalist somehow...not a singer.

Anyway

I go a bit gooey over female vocalists with cystal clear, intoxicating voices....
