Ah well, we've all been there. I have a small pottery horse that reeked of ancient charm on the photo but was naff when it arrived. Ebay is a jungle and they're very half-hearted in the face of official requests to clean it up as they'd lose almost all their antiquities business. Someone in New Scientist has just said - "It is now a reasonable assumption that any Egyptian piece that is for sale is either fake or was looted."

Yes, there's an early Chinese temmoku rice bowl listed, that I've got my eye on. It's not the lack of provenance (diving find) that bothers me as much as the little chip on the rim. Give me a shed and a kiln and I could turn them out at the rate of about twenty a day! On the other hand it is rewarding getting some piece of vintage machinery, perhaps rescued from the journey to landfill, into the hands of someone that appreciates it (usually for about three quid plus postage).
