I booked the ferries and a hotel on Orkney the week before I went. . The 'Standing Stones' hotel is 1 mile from the stones of Stenness & 2 mile from Brodgar ( that's walking, they are a lot closer crow flying-wise). £39 a night b&b and we could see Maes Howe, Brodgar & Stenness from the bedroom window. . and walked to the stones to have a late night whiskey & cheese based picnic on the second night. http://www.standingstoneshotel.com/orkney.html
