I can't see any rhyme or reason in removing a stone from Ramsdale. The nearby farmland has been much improved and there are many large stones within the field walls, cup and ring stones found in the walls may provide is evidence that the farmers may have cleared cairns from the fields. However the Ramsdale stones are outwith the improved area and there are lots of stones laying around, presumably if a fourth stone existed it would be of a similar size to the other three, i.e. a big bugger.

The stone triangle idea was first mooted by Knox,a fascinating fella who wrote a wonderful book that was published in the mid 1800's following years of observation and survey, there's a copy on google books here

His proposed triangles are a bit iffy to say the least but they are based on years of local observation.

thanks a lot, esp for link, good book i like how he links the geology and place, nowadays[in books] everything seems separate, it sounds like we should thank him in relation to blakey, to quote the favourite bit i read "I told him what had been their use and begged he would preserve them" {what a man}, but his arguement for 3 stones only uses there [blakey] and like i said when the light is right you can clearly see all the silted up holes [of the full circle], and if you follow the 4 posters down from aberdeenshire though perthshire down into northumberland and on to n york moors and look at the geology[and spread of people, ideas and into robin hoods bay by sea]] it starts to make more sense, i totally respect your opnion though, i just think its christians pulling 1 stone down to make the trilogy, and that 1 stone would not be there because it would have been broken up to make a wall or build a road, you have some beautiful countryside up there though, tar
