Nige.... check out these pages on the 'Camunian Rose' motif of Valcamonica in Northern Italy... there's a remarkable similarity to the Ilkley Moor Swastika Stone. Your pretty much on course with the idea of aranging a pattern around a cross of nine cups. Maybe brought over by Roman troops recruited from the area stationed at Olicana fort in Ilkley. The fylfot motif was also a symbol of Brigid and as much of Yorkshire was occupied by the Brigantine tribe... who knows?

It's also reckoned that the 'hook' part of the Ilkley motif points towards the summer solstic sunrise. I remember reading something somewhere once stating that it was based on the same groundplan as Stonehenge????? Guess it's just as plausible as the theory that its a Victorian hoax!
