Funny thing dowsing....

This thread reminded me that when I was a kid, me and a mate saw a programme that showed you how to make dowsing rods out of coat hangers and old biro's for holders (Blue Peter has really gone downhill since then..)
Anyway, we gave it a go and had a wonder around the field behind my parents. We got some funny looks off the other kids but when we walked through an avenue of old trees, the rods crossed over - we thought we'd discovered water. When I told the old man about it later he explained that the trees lined an old trackway from the local manor house to a nearby village.
We never bothered to go dowsing again, (getting laughed at by yer school mates can have that effect on a kid!) and I've never done it since - don't know if I believe in this sort of thing anyway - but I didn't realise until now that dowsers could detect trackways.
