don't underestimate the effects of (relatively) modern pollution - Pictish carvings round here that were made as far back as 1500 or 1600 years ago were super crisp right up into Victorian times, then started to "weather" rapidly after that

Indeed. I have many slides of the Irish High Crosses taken by Anthony Weir in the 1980s showing how good the detail on them still was then (a time when Ireland was still ploughing fields with hores in some parts.) Compared to the images I have taken they are spectacular. At some time I will be doing a 'then and now' section on megalithomania to highlight this.
