Hi I am finaly going to Newgrange on weds next, got my flights 4p for the two of us. Ihave also hired a car, Newgrange is my priority but I would also like to visit some other sites. We are only there for the day so everything must be north of Dublin. My plan is to get to Newgrange for about 10 to 1030 Idon' know how long everything takes, but Ido take a LOT of photos. I would be gratefull for ideas photo positions, aproachs to get the best effects and atmosphere I sure you know what I meen. Other sites that I can do at a lesurly pace I believe Knoth is closed? but is it worth going to get some pics?. Any help would be greatfully appreciated as I have waited a long time to visit this "Mecca "so want a special day.

Fourknocks is a must.

Knowth maybe closed, but Dowth never is (except for the passages, natch.)

And Tara is nearly a must.

You may already know that you can't take photos inside the chamber unless you get prior permission from officialdom (and have substantial public liability insurance), but morning time is the best for outside pics since it faces south east. Look out for the barely noticeable carvings on some of the kerbstones going anti-clockwise from the entrance.

As Fourwinds says, definitely do Fourknocks and get the key up the road from Mrs. White (you need a 20 euro deposit). Loughcrew is only another 3/4 hour from Newgrange and if the coffee shop is open you can get the key for Cairn T, a must.

As for atmosphere, Newgrange really only comes to life at dawn and dusk, during the day the overwhelming quartz wall and gangs of tourists kind of sap away the vibes.

Here's some pics to whet your appetite: http://www.cianmcliam.smugmug.com/gallery/3899698/1/226224431/Large

Had a brill day did Tara, Newgrange, Dowth and Four Knocks. Apart from forgetting a torch and having to use my cameras infra red beam. Good weather blue skys but windy and "Mad Polish drivers" ended up up a few banks but had a fun time lots of photos thanks for the help
