The Deadlaw example is a part of the design but has been excluded, wilfully, by modern interpreters. With a ruler you'd find that it was two megalithic inches across. The nearest to a handle on an explanation is perhaps bound up with that dimension. Somehow.

Here's another one - http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/post/52094 - though there's a good argument that these were made to hold a wooden peg with a staple, or something, to hold the gate closed.
