Not all of the markings being identified as rock art these days is genuine. There's an awful lot of natural solution marks being mis-identified (IMO). This is not to lesson the efforts of all those nutters who spend hours scouring the countryside for this stuff. They do amazing work. I just think they get a bit carried away at times.
I know what you mean FW, the problem with RA is its subjectivity, especially where rocks that just have cup marks are concerned. Theres dozens of pics in my gallery of scheduled, or referenced carvings that are dubious to say the least.

It's not an entirely subjective evaluation - there are published scientific criteria ( http://www.eng-h.gov.uk/mpp/mcd/cupring.htm ). But what about the 'drilled stones'? If a hole has been made to hold a shaft, such as in one of the 'battle axes', then it's not considered Rock Art. It's an implement. But what if an identical hole has been made in a large boulder ? Maybe the hole was made to take a pole for a banner - is that Rock Art ?
