I see CARN classifies some as 'prehistoric' and some as 'unknown'. However if Jan (rockartuk) of BRAC thinks they are prehistoric, that's good enough for me :-).

Not all of the markings being identified as rock art these days is genuine. There's an awful lot of natural solution marks being mis-identified (IMO). This is not to lesson the efforts of all those nutters who spend hours scouring the countryside for this stuff. They do amazing work. I just think they get a bit carried away at times.
