Ta Rhiannon, I'd totally forgotten about that, must pay more attention. FW's irish ones seem to add weight to the 'not prehistoric' line of thinking. My contribution to that thread was a bit useless, but now I can answer my own question, I shall bump it up :)

That castle at featherstone is the original castle ( http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/post/51818 ) and my friend grew up there. If her antecedents had been pelted with vegetables she would have told me about it. They (the estate) were late in adopting 'new' rents so there were times when you could rent a house from them for three quid a week. I've found what looks very much like a long barrow, near there, hidden behind a tall hedge. at Coney Wood.
