Thanks for that. Errington-Rea used to dig fireclay in that valley - but closer to the road, on the north side. My friend owns them - not literally, as it's held in trust. She has three fifths of the vote now, I think. Trustafarian - she's the lady with the shades in the picture captioned Grandmothers Break Siege here ( http://www.saveoaks.com/SaveOaks/Main.html ). She's a godgrandmother!

Those stones will be carved, you know. I was peeved when the archaeologist decided that the Thornhope rows were medieval field wall remains. I've been working on the walls in that parish exclusively, since '84, and it should be me that told him what m. fieldwall remnants look like. We've got scraps of Viking wall there even. Well, I call them Viking!

There was a pair of standing stones I found in a hedge at Hillis Close, the year before last, after it had been grubbed out. I wasn't recording to the SMR that year, as a protest against the archs. lack of support. Last year the stones were bulldozed. There's also a substantial standing stone in the hedge to the south of there. It's safe. And opposite to Herdley Bank School is what looks very much like a Long Barrow. Long views from there to Brampton and beyond, and it'll also be near or on the Featherstone/Coanwood parish boundary - which is supporting evidence.

I'm fettling my sound equipment for the summer. Last year was the pits. A curious anomaly is that the GoogleMaps has been refreshed over my basecamp, from 2000 to 2006, although it seems just over the basecamp field. Pan east, west, north or south and it turns to 'images not available'. Could Google be supporting England's Largest Sculpture? I cut through the grounds of N.C. this morning. Looking for an abandoned bike to get a chain off - without success.

You've still not found the cup-marked stone steps, amongst the ballistae, at this end of the High Level. These take some explaining. I've not photographed them, either, although I did find a Nikon F2 camera in a skip nearby, a year ago. I sold it in three pieces on ebaY - £120! Too heavy for everyday use ...

I only did a year of Latin - forty six years ago - and it's ballista. But, Hob, do you want the farmer's phone number, in Kirkhaugh, so that he can tell you that the name of the site you've incorrectly labeled is 'Thornhope' and not 'Low Thornhope'. Copying someone else's mistake is, perhaps, worse than making the mistake in the first place (and I should know, being mistake prone). If you think of the wet stuff that falls from the sky and add an 'e' on the end - then look him up in the phonebook, another John, see what that says!
