Don't get me started. I'll start crying.

But I do feel compelled to mention the fact that when the beer garden of the (fairly mediocre, but still nostalgic) Barley Mow was removed to make way for the new Quayside road, they found the remians of a Bronze age burial cairn that had (until then) survived the tribulations of centuries of heavy industry etc.

Nobody told me that. I worked on the 'project' that came in its place - specifically the retaining wall. It's concrete faced with decent stone. I worked for about a month as a Banker Mason, putting a face on the stone. (They wouldn't let me go as far as the Victorians did, but). It's still there, of course, and allowed me an inside view of the Quayside refurbishment.
