Great to see these. Most seem to be singular, which I wouldn't have expected over there. Interesting. I would have backed more earthfast examples than 'portable' ones. It'll be interesting to see what the final balance is. I suppose it's a case of switch over zone between th Midlands and West.

I think I have this coming Saturday sorted now (after Knockbrack RA!) Thanks!

If u are thinking of heading down give it another week or two, there are at least about 20 other sites in North / South Tipp that I want to visit. Might save you some time. These are some of the easier to find ones that I have posted.
No sign of any rock-art Im afraid but I think I have started to get a better insight into the bullaun stones and they are a very nice type of monument.

Given that many of these lovely bullaun stones are definitely associated with christian sites, do you not think we should be classifying them in the same way we classify holy wells i.e. placing disputed antiquity labels on them, unless they have clear prehistoric provenances?

cheers fitz

A the couple of the outsides of the portable ballaun stones show signs of being chipped flat, to make angular sides - like an old threepenny bit eg. The earthfast stone, with a deep carved hole, has three carved figures toward the edge of the rock, under lichen (on the righthandside in the photograph). 'The fonts are the same, only the religion has changed.'
