Ballingowan Henge

close

Anyone ever hear of it?
It is meant to be a 19m diameter submerged henge. This is according to Uriels Machine which I am reading at the moment. (Puts it east of Tralee in Kerry)
Checked archaeology.ie and there are about 5 enclosures to the east of Tralee that could be it.
Anyone with more info? they note Archaeology Ireland vol 12 no.6 issue 46, winter 1998 as its source.

Now that got my attention. I spend a while around Clogher
(Ballimacelliot) a few years ago doing a field project. The area you mention
was not near me, also the N22 Tralee bypass / Tralee to Bealagrellagh
runs very close to the spot you mention.
At http://www.kerrycoco.ie/Roads/2552%20Main%20Report%20Volume%202.pdf You will find a report on the N22 Tralee bypass and in it is the
reporting of monuments are listed, but it does mention a ring
barrow at Ballingowan on page 236 of the report. In fact from pg 229
onwards there is a lot of mention of Archeology.
It would appear that it was not on the proposed route so I assume if
there is no visable site above ground they do not bother with it.
Not sure if you would see much now as there would have been a lot of
plant tracking back and forth during the construction of the road.
I hope to be down that way towards end of August so I may take a look
myself.
Hope this helps in some way.

Actually I was ahead of myself as regards to that section of the N22.

The Kerry Co.Co, report is dated June 2008, so unless there are
robots working on the road, the area is still undisturbed, which would be
good as monuments in the roads path are still there, surely worth a picture or two before they are gone.

Hi Bawn , I've just ahd a read of the article , it's by Michael Connolly and Tom Condit , it is mostly concerned with a possible "water cult" associated with ten hengiforms in the Lee Valley . There are two enclosures east of Tralee , at Ballingowan ,one , 63 m in diameter floods to a depth of over 1m most of the year . There is no mention of a 19m diameter henge or astronomy . The henge closest to Tralee is at the junction of two tributaries of the Lee whilst the other , 1.5 Km furhter east is just to south of one of the above tributaries . Hope that helps .
