Alken and I are attempting an ascent of our beloved Tryfan on Friday.
I was wondering if you could give us any advice about it, Ive been up once before trying to follow the heather terrace, but found it hard going. Is there an easier way up ? should we come at it from the south from Bwlch Tryfan ?
Plus, is there a way from there up to Glyder Fach, the map shows a path but what is it like ? easy, hard, scary ?
Really, anything you can say about the matter would be greatly appreciated.
That goes for anyone who's been up there, Help wanted.
Thanks,
Chris.
I'd be looking to go up from the south-west(ish), heading from Ogwen toward Llyn Bochlwyd (the path leading to Bwlch Tryfan). It's been a while since I went up - the last 'attempt' was cancelled at the last minute due to heavy rain, one of my wiser decisions - but you should see a eroded 'path' of sorts going up at that point. I wouldn't recommend the east face at all and, although the north ridge is excellent I would rate it a considerable challenge nowadays.
Coming down again to Bwlch Tryfan the 'classic' way to Glyder Fach is Bristly Ridge... obvious and in the same vein as the north ridge, that is not the easiest... however you can bypass the dodgy bits on a scree path to its left. I'd go with that since the walk's tough enough as its is, perhaps. If you're going on to Glyder Fawr there's a track from there down to Llyn y Cwn, from there to Twll Du (Devil's Kitchen' and down to Cwm Idwal.
If you don't fancy all of that a lovely ridge called Y Gribin descends north near the wondrous Castell-y-Gwynt back down to Llyn Bochlwyd. I'd be more that happy with that, to be honest.
Good luck. And get some zooms of the circle!
