Go, The Time Team! :)

"On Sunday 6 February 2011 at 5.25 pm Channel 4 will be screening the 200th edition of Time Team. This special edition of the programme, screened during the 60th anniversary year of Dartmoor’s designation as a National Park, tells the story of three days of investigations carried out at Tottiford Reservoir on Dartmoor.

In August 2010 Channel 4’s Time Team spent three days investigating a recently discovered prehistoric complex at Tottiford Reservoir, near Hennock, on Dartmoor.  The discovery of the complex, which includes a stone circle and stone rows, was announced by Dartmoor National Park Authority following the draining of the reservoir by South West Water for maintenance.

The Time Team crew of over 60 included their well known presenters, Tony Robinson, Mick Aston, Phil Harding and Francis Pryor .
A number of trenches were opened up at strategic points over the site, various types of geophysical survey took place, old maps were looked at in detail and the former landscape setting of the site was examined.  The site was also flown over and a reconstruction of how the site might have appeared in prehistory was produced by their artist Victor Ambrus.

The results of Time Team’s 3 days of investigation were exciting and
unexpected.

Great stuff, thanks Goff

So it wasn't a stone henge after all but a stone circle. I'm surprised they made that mistake on their own website.

Anyway who cares, I thoroughly enjoyed it anyway. I thought the mesolithic aspect was particularly interesting that it was still being reveered in the bronze age.

A bit like the totem poles at Stonehenge or the neolithic long house found at Warren Field in Aberdeenshire recently which was near to a large mesolithis post alignment.

The mound reminded me of a book I read recently called a gathering night, set is Scotland in the mesolithic. They used a sacred mound for rituals to contact animal spirits. Would be good to get others views.

I thought it was one of the best episodes as most of the prehistoric ones tend to be and it's definitely whetted my appetite even more for a trip to the dartmoor sites.

Superb programme. Fitted together so well and over such a long time period. Still buzzing from it (and watched it again straight away afterwards!!).

PLEASE HELP TO SAVE THE BULLRING HENGE.

i watched this, i couldnt help thinking that the row of stones leading to the raised area could have been a base for a bridge.

oh and it gets on my nerves when they say everything is sacred or a religious site. it could have just been someones house.

Really enjoyed this and to be honest nearly wet myself over the find of a "new" stone circle. I was surprised about the cairns being modern, most Dartmoor rows have terminal cairns yet there was nothing connected to the double stone row.

I was looking at the OS while watching the prog and was amazed by how little other prehistoric remains there are anywhere near this site, given that Dartmoor "proper" is covered. Perhaps this highlights the enprmous amount of archaeology that has been lost in more heavily agricultural areas.

At least Mr Pryor didn't start on about liminal space. :-)

I recorded the dig and have just watched it again. Some of the original claims are quite amazing and just for a laugh I imagined Francis going into a courtroom and trying to prove what he was claiming. What do you think the verdict would be and I'm being completely cynical here! The (bracketed) text is my cynical verdict.

When Francis was asked by Tony soon after the beginning of the programme, "What does it mean, what was it for? he replied:-

"Well what is was, was for the different things in peoples lives that they wanted made formal and ceremonial." (Pure guesswork).

"The cairns were for when someone passed on to the next world" (total speculation).

"The double row of stones a processional route possibly for a new Chief when he came to power" (total speculation).

"The stone circle is where they came to celebrate the changing of the seasons" (total speculation)

As I say, just a bit of fun but it sort of becomes par for the course doesn't it when in reality we actually haven't a clue what it is all about!

I'll go and lie down now :D

When Francis Pryor said "The cairns were for when someone passed on to the next world" I'm afraid I felt a bit of a heave.
Was it teatime Sunday, family viewing that stopped him saying the "dead" word? I can take "passed away" no bother - but "passed on to the next world" just made me think he was gonna start talking about fairies next.

But great to have TT back!
