It's sadly true that if you can get to Newgrange/Knowth then you should do so. If you have your own transport then go to Fourknocks & Dowth also.

However, never go to Newgrange expecting anything other than a cattle herded tourist sensation centred on one of the most amazing structures of the ancient world.

You do have to see Newgrange before you die, just like you have to see Stonehenge, but the parallels between the two experiences are very, very similar.

I always knock Newgrange because I believe that the reconstruction of the facade is nowhere near what it would have been like. That said it is a truly amazing structure. There are not many sites that can even begin to match it.
