Cruitne are thought to be the earlier name for the Dál nAraide, who were Gaelic speaking and there is no evidence that they were related to Picts.They used the Derbfine system for succession and not the British system. Scholars such as Kenneth Jackson and Daibhi ó ógain are adamant about this.The Dál nAraide were based in South Antrim.

The derbfine system was used in Briatin too . It is assumed that the Picts were matrilinear but there is little proof , like most things associated with the Picts .
