But they aren't safe! Many have trees growing through them that are ripping them apart or get hit by tractors or get pulled up while noone is looking. Who shouts about these? Hardly anyone.

A few months ago a farmer demolished the banks of the largest promontory fort in Ireland. This only came to light when a local guide passed by one day.

I agree that something must be done to protect the unknown, but the same effort must be put in to protecting what is known. It can't just be a series of 'not on my doorstep' campaigns, which is what it tends to be.

It has to be NOT IN MY COUNTRY! NOT IN MY WORLD!

Until we can prove that we can look after what we've got what's the point?

I am not saying that saving stuff from the bulldozer is not a priority. It needs saving. It needs preserving and not just 'by record'. What I am saying is that the same effort should be put into looking after what we've got already.

It's the focus on the destruction of the unknown while everyday the known is deteriorating or disappearing that pisses me off.

Shouting about the destruction of 40 monuments while 15000 are crumbling seems a little short sighted to me. By all means shout about the 40, but don't forget the rest! But people from Meath aren't going to shout about things happening in Donegal or Mayo are they?
